Fig tree or commonly called as ‘Medi chettu’ in Telugu is a sacred tree for Hindus. Perhaps may be due to its immense medicinal values. In Sanskrit it is called Oudumbara a common plant in Shirdi Sai Baba and Dattatreya temples. Almost all parts of the plant are of medicinal value. The tree is a perennial tree grows to a height of about 20 feet. It is commonly grows in forests and in agricultural fields. Ripened fruits are sweet and liked by children. Birds also eat these fruits. The plant can be propagated by stem cuttings and seedlings. Latex oozes from all parts of the plant. The dried stems are used
in Homams (Yagams).
Medicinal uses of Fig tree:
The extract made from the bark of the tree has got anti bacterial properties. Hence it is used a dressing for wounds and to clean Pustular wounds on the skin. It can also be used for burnt wounds.
The latex obtained from the plant is also used as a dressing for the wounds.
A plaster made with latex from the plant is used for applying on the swelling of Mums.
The extract made with the bark of the plant is used as a gargling lotion for dental problems.
A powder made from the dried roots of the plant if taken with water or buttermilk gives relief for dysentery.
Women suffering with Leucorrhea can take the latex from the bark (Dried) twice daily gives a good relief.
Fruits are useful in blood vomitions and gastric problems. Dried and powdered fruits can be taken one spoon daily gives relief.
For urinary problems the extract made from the roots if taken gives an excellent relief. The plant is a must grown in every house due to its medicinal values.
